According to the Huffington Post, “The first American bishop criminally charged in the clergy sex abuse scandal was found guilty Thursday of a misdemeanor count of failing to report suspected child abuse”. Bishop Robert Finn of the Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph was originally charged as a result of having knowledge of a Reverend in his diocese possessing child pornography, and failing to report him to authorities. Finn had initially argued that he was not responsible for reporting, and that this responsibility was held by Vicar General Robert Murphy. It is refreshing and reaffirming to know that Finn was charged and convicted, a clear message that those in positions of power and authority are being held accountable for disregarding the health, safety, and welfare of the youth in our communities.
