THAT IS ANTI-VIOLENCE PROGRAM THAT IS LED BY AND FOR THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY. AND THEY'RE REALLY LOOKING AT HOW THEY BUILD COMMUNITY AND COMMUNITY CARE AND SAFETY OUTSIDE OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT. AND -- AND STILL KEEPING THE COMMUNITY SAFE AND CHALLENGING HATE AND BIAS AND VIOLENCE THAT HAPPENS IN THE COMMUNITY. SO THEY DO THIS THROUGH A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT WAYS THAT INCLUDES PREVENTION AND EDUCATION AND BYSTANDER INTERVENTION AND SAFETY PLANNING. AND THEN RESPONDING TO THE COMMUNITY'S NEEDS OF CRISIS CENTER INTERVENTION IF NEEDED. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT THEY'VE DEVELOPED WHICH I REALLY LOVE IS THIS SAFE PARTY PLANNING ZEN. THE TREVOR PROJECT SURVEY IS ANOTHER SURVEY DONE BY THE TREVOR PROJECT. AND IT'S A NATIONAL SURVEY AND PROVIDES GOOD DATA ON ISSUES THAT STUDENTS FACE. AND THEN THE CALIFORNIA HEALTHY KIDS SURVEY IS A SURVEY THAT IS GIVEN IN SCHOOL TO STUDENTS. AND IT SURVEYS THEIR SENSE OF SAFETY, THEIR SENSE OF OPTIMISM. THINGS ARE CRAZY HAPPENING IN SCHOOL BOARD MEETINGS. SO THIS WAS BEFORE ALL OF THAT. SO MY GUESS IT'S GOING TO INCREASE IN THE NEXT SURVEY. BUT HOMOPHOBIC AND NEGATIVE REMARKS ABOUT GENDER EXPRESSION FROM TEACHER AND STAFF INCREASED FROM 2019 TO 2021. 52% STUDENTS OF LGBTQ+ STUDENTS TO DROP OUT. AND THEN THE TREVOR PROJECT. SURVEY LGBTQ+ STUDENTS AND MENTAL HEALTH. I WILL LET YOU LOOK AT THAT DATA FOR A SECOND. AND THE TOP GRAPH IS SEXUAL ORIENTATION AND THE BOTTOM GRAPH IS GENDER IDENTITY. OR THEY MAY NOT FEEL THAT NONBINARY, FEMALE OR MALE DESCRIBE WHO THEY ARE. MOST LIKELY SOMETHING ELSE WOULD BE PEOPLE IN THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY. AND THE STATISTIC THAT WE REALLY HONE IN ON IS CONSIDERED SUICIDE. YOU CAN SEE IN SEVENTH GRADE 7% OF MALE STUDENTS CONSIDERED SUICIDE. IT'S NOT ATTEMPTED SUICIDE BUT CONSIDERED SUICIDE. FEMALES 16%. OVER DOUBLE OF THE MALES. NONBINARY JUMPS TO 51%, THAT'S VERY ALARMING. AND SOMETHING ELSE IS 45%. SO AS A RESULT OF THESE THINGS HAPPENING IN SAN DIEGO UNIFIED. WE WORKED TOGETHER AND THIS RESOLUTION WAS MADE AND PASSED. IT'S THE RESOLUTION OF LGBTQ+ SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL SAFETY FOR THE STUDENTS. I HAVE THE RESOLUTION LINKED IN THE SLIDE SHOW WHERE THE ARROW IS, YOU CAN CHECK THAT OUT. BUT THERE ARE FIVE PARTS TO IT, INCREASE SAFETY AT SCHOOL AND MAKE STUDENTS FEEL MORE CONNECTED. THE FIRST IS CURRICULUM. INCLUSIVE CURRICULUM. WHEN STUDENTS SEE THEMSELVES ACCURATELY AND RESPECTFULLY PRESENTED IN CURRICULUM. IT'S PROVEN THAT THEY DO BETTER IN SCHOOL. THAT'S FOR ALL PEOPLE. WHEN PEOPLE SEE PEOPLE SIMILAR TO THEIR GENDER, THEIR RACE, THEIR SEXUALITY. THEIR ORIGIN. THEY FEEL MORE CONNECTED TO THEIR CURRICULUM, BECAUSE THEY CAN RELATE TO IT. AND THERE IS A LACK OF LGBTQ+ REPRESENTATION IN A LOT OF SCHOOL'S CURRICULUM. BULLY PREVENTION WAS SECOND ASPECT. IN SAN DIEGO UNIFIED WE HAVE A PROGRAM CALLED ALLY ACTION, ONE OF OUR PEERS RUNS. MAINLY AT ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS. AND GOES IN IT'S A WHOLE SEMESTER LONG PROGRAM. HE WORKS WITH STUDENT LEADERS AND IT BECOMES SUSTAINED AT THE SCHOOL AFTER HE LEAVES. THE STUDENTS CARRY IT ON. AND GSA AND RAINBOW SUPPORT. GSA STANDS FOR GENDERS AND SEXUALITY ALLIANCE. IT USED TO BE GAY STRAIGHT ALLIANCE AND THE TERM EVOLVEED TO INCOPERATE GENDER IoT. GSAS ARE AT MIDDLE SCHOOLS AND HIGH SCHOOLS AND RAINBOW CLUBS AT ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS. THEY ARE PRETTY DIFFERENT. GSA'S OFTEN COULD BE SOCIAL GROUPS OR ADVOCACY GROUPS DEPENDING ON THE STUDENTS IN THE GROUP WHAT THEY WANT TO DO. BOTH OF SAFE PLACES FOR LGBTQ+ YOUTH AND ALLIES TO INTERACT WITH EACH OTHER AND FIND COMMUNITY. AND NEXT ONE IS GENDER AFFIRMING RESTROOMS AND LOCKER ROOMS. AND I GO OUT WITH THE DEPARTMENT AND MEET WITH ADMINISTRATORS AND WALK THE SCHOOL GROUNDS TO IDENTIFY SPACES THAT CAN BE CONVERTED. THE REASON THAT LGBTQ+ STUDENTS REPORT THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF BULLYING INCIDENTS IN BATHROOMS AND LOCKER ROOMS. AND IT'S IMPORTANT THAT THEY NEED SAFE PLACES TO CHANGE AND USE THE RESTROOM. THERE IS A LOT OF STUDIES AROUND THE RESTROOM AND A HIGHER CHANCE OF URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS BECAUSE THEY DON'T USE THE BATHROOM. AND INCREASING THAT SPACE. AND IN SAN DIEGO UNIFIED WE CONVERTED MANY SPACES. GENDER INCLUSIVE BATHROOMS AND SAFE PLACES FOR STUDENTS TO CHANGE THAT ARE PRIVATE. THESE ARE NOT JUST FOR LGBTQ+, IF A STUDENT IS UNCOMFORTABLE TO CHANGE IN A LOCKER ROOM. THEY ARE ENCOURAGED TO USE THE PRIVACY AREAS AND THE BATHROOM. AND IN SOME SCHOOLS THE BATHROOM IS IN THE NURSE'S OFFICE AND OTHERS FOUND A SINGLE STALL RESTROOM TO CONVERT. AND LAST PIECE IS TRAINING AND PROFESSIONAL LEARNING. AND ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO WE DID AT EVERY SITE LGBTQ+ AWARENESS TRAINING, ED-CODE, AND ALL THE THINGS. AND NOW GOING AROUND AND DOING A REFRESHER AT MANY SCHOOLS. THE STUDENT IDENTIFIES A SAFE TEACHER AND STAFF MEMBER TO ATTEND THE MEETING. PARENTS ARE INVITED IF THE STUDENT FEELS THEY ARE SAFE. THIS IS A SAFETY PLAN WHILE THE STUDENT IS AT SCHOOL. WE ONLY INVITE PEOPLE THAT THE STUDENT WANTS TO BE THERE. AND IT COVERS MULTIPLE THINGS INCLUDING WHICH RESTROOM AND LOCKER ROOM. AND WHO SAFE ADULTS ARE. SO THEY MAY ASK FOR THAT. SOME STUDENTS MAY ASK FOR ASSISTANCE OF TALKING TO A TEACHER ABOUT WHO THEY ARE. AND THINGS LIKE THAT ALL COME OUT IN THIS MEETING. AND THE FORM THAT IS LINKED HERE IS FROM THE SAN DIEGO COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION. WE USE THE SAME EXACT FORM, IT HAS OUR LOGOS ON IT IN SAN DIEGO UNIFIED. IN THE OLDER BUILDINGS, WE FIND A RESTROOM AND CHECK ALL THE GUIDELINES WITH OSHA AND MAKE SURE THAT WE CAN TAKE IT AND CONVERT IT. AND GET PERMISSION FROM THE SCHOOL, PRINCIPAL. AND PUT SIGNAGE ON IT AND INDICATE WHETHER IT'S A STUDENT OR STAFF BATHROOM. WE DON'T SHARE BATHROOMS WITH STUDENT AND STAFF. AND LESSONS OF LGBTQ+ PEOPLE AND ISSUES CAN BE TIED TO THEMES AND HISTORICAL MONTHS. AND BY PROACTIVELY HELPING STUDENTS TO DEVELOP MUTUAL RESPECT AND UNDERSTANDING FOR ALL AND EDUCATORS WILL FIND THEMSELVES SPENDING LESS TIME IN CLASS TIME ADDRESSING BEHAVIOR ISSUE AND TEACHING MORE CURRICULUM. THERE ARE THINGS HAPPENING HIGH UP THAT ARE TRYING TO WORK TO KEEP THESE PEOPLE ACCOUNTABLE. BUT WE HAVE THE SAME STRUGGLE AND I HEAR YOU, IT'S REALLY CHALLENGING. SOME DISTRICTS THEY WILL NOT EVEN LISTEN. LIKE I GO -- I PERSONALLY GO TO SCHOOL BOARD MEETINGS OUTSIDE OF MY SCHOOL DISTRICT AND ADVOCATE FOR LGBTQ+ YOUTH OFTEN. AND I TRY TO REASON WITH THEM AND EXPLAIN WHY THESE THINGS ARE IMPORTANT AND SHARE THINGS I HAVE SEEN AND SHARE STATISTICS ABOUT SUICIDE. BUT WITHIN SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND I KNOW THEY ARE ALL DIFFERENT AND IN CALIFORNIA SOMETIMES SCHOOL DISTRICTS ARE TWO SCHOOLS IN A RURAL AREA.
