Description

This web conference is an adapted version of a session originally presented at VALOR's pre-conference and is designed for rape crisis advocates facilitating or planning to start support groups for incarcerated survivors. Participants will explore approaches for developing and adapting group curricula, building and maintaining collaborative relationships with facility staff, and sustaining groups over time. Discussion will center on common challenges, lessons learned, and insights from experienced facilitators. The session will also include time for Q&A and collective problem-solving around barriers advocates have encountered when establishing or providing groups on the inside.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify effective approaches for developing or adapting group curricula for incarcerated survivors
  • Deepen understanding of the context and dynamics that can shape support group experiences inside detention facilities
  • Explore strategies for outreach, collaboration, and sustainability of groups within prisons and jails
