UN Women Executive Director Michelle Bachelet visits Berkeley, CA

Michelle Bachelet, the first Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of United Nations (UN) Women, and Chile’s President from 2006 – 2010, will lead a seminar on “Women’s Rights: A Global Challenge” at UC Berkeley on Thursday, April 14.  People are encouraged to submit questions for Under-Secretary-General Bachelet by going to the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) website.
Gender-based violence has been an important focus area for the UN in the last decade. In the summer of 2010, the UN issued a document highlighting the work across continents on the “Intensification of efforts to eliminate all forms of violence against women” which also provides recommendations on how member states can eliminate sexual violence.  In sum, the UN suggests that a “stronger focus must be placed on prevention, to complement more effectively the improved laws, policies and programmes and their implementation, monitoring and evaluation” while ensuring that efforts are “systematic, sustained and extended throughout all areas of the country” (United Nations, 2010).
