2011 was another successful year for Denim Day and Sexual Assault Awareness Month. People spoke loudly about the issue and shared their vision to see an end to sexual violence. Although the month is nearly over, let’s not forget: The issues surrounding sexual assault deserve attention all year round.
Rape does not happen only in April. It is just a month to highlight the work that has to take place every day, every week and every month. Let’s continue to raise awareness by: asking the media cover rape cases responsibly; partnering with policymakers to support meaningful legislation that will contribute to effectively addressing sexual violence; and continuing to recognize sexual assault as a significant social problem.
