DD save the dateIn recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Denim Day California, the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault (CALCASA) encourage all Legislators and staff to wear jeans on Wednesday, April 29, 2015, to raise awareness about sexual assault and show support for victims of sexual assault. Join us on April 29th on the West Steps of the CA State Capitol as legislators, advocates, agency staff, and community members stand in solidarity with survivors of sexual assault.

What is Denim Day?

Denim Day was originally triggered by a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent.  The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans insolidarity with the victim. Denim Day California was developed by Peace Over Violence in response to this case and wearing jeans during this annual event has become a symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault.

Have you heard of the film, “The Hunting Ground”? This movie, from the producers of “The Invisible War”, portrays a haunting reality for college campuses: the plague of sexual assault and the intentional and inadequate response of administrators. In partnership with the Legislative Women’s Caucus, we invite you to attend a screening of the film on Wednesday, April 28 at 6 PM.
