Description

In this session, participants will engage in dialogue about support services for an underserved population of survivors: the disability community. Discussion will cover the various types of disabilities within the community that constitute the spectrum of disability, the history of disability and how the perceptions of that identity have impacted the safety of disabled bodies. Myths and stereotypes will be debunked to undo biases learned about the community.

Learning Objectives

  • Define disability and distinguish the differences between people-first language versus identity-first language;
  • Provide historical context that affects our perceptions of the disability community;
  • Examine barriers to reporting/accessing services for both on-campus and community; and
  • Develop strategies for advocates to expand services and programs for disabled populations.
