CALCASA is proud to announce that it has been awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women to work collaboratively with the Women of Color Network (WOCN), a project of the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence (NRCDV), to establish a national technical assistance project entitled LEAP (Leadership, Education and Advancement for Professionals). The three-year award will work to increase the opportunity of leaders of color to obtain and preserve management and executive positions within the anti-sexual and domestic violence fields.
The need for such a project is documented in the WOCN’s 2010 nation- wide survey on the experiences of WOC executives in the S.A. and D.V. movements, funded by the Ms. Foundation for Women. The report is entitled, WOMEN OF COLOR LEADERSHIP: A Look at the Experiences of Women of Color Executives in the Anti-Violence Against Women’s Movement. In line with the recommendations in this report, the LEAP project will work with leaders of color to enhance their professional capacity, create a community of support, maximize skills development, facilitate communication and support, and provide a range of tailored education, training, technical assistance, and support services.
CALCASA joins with the WOCN in acknowledging the Office on Violence Against Women for recognizing and supporting, through this award, the need to increase the number of management and executive leaders of color.
