Outrage, action, and the belief that ending sexual violence was possible sparked VALOR’s founding in 1980. Our work to end sexual violence was started by people who had the courage to fight the status quo and demand better for survivors and communities.

Yet, so many of us doing that work now also face a current reality that parallels the past: powerful people who are not held accountable for harm they cause; the normalization of sexual violence; a lack of investment in preventing violence before it happens.

Nothing changes if nothing changes.

This current moment provides an opportunity for all of us to ask ourselves: What do we want for our next 50 years? Have we transformed to meet the needs of our communities? What progress have we made to prevent sexual violence? Are our organizations thriving, or are they just surviving?

It’s up to all of us to find the valor to strengthen our community roots, connect and learn from other movements, reflect on how we’ve reimagined ourselves, decide how we want our future to look, and courageously work to make it happen.

It’s up to us to act with valor and create a new reality where sexual assault does not happen and our communities are safe, healthy, and thriving.

It’s time for us to meet this moment.

Join VALOR in 2027 for a year of “Courage and Valor,” as we harness our outrage over continuing injustices and abuses of power to lead large scale change, creating a world free from sexual violence.
