Objectives:

  • As a result of this training, participants will be better able to explain how common beliefs about people who commit sexual offenses harm prevention efforts.
  • As a result of this training, participants will be better able to describe how treatment reduces sexual offense re-offending.
  • As a result of this training, participants will be able identify at least three reasons why individuals engage in sexually abusive behaviors.

Description: What do we know about people who commit sexual offenses? Who are they? What drives them to cause sexual harm to others? What can be done to decrease the likelihood that they will harm others in the future? While frequently oversimplified in media portrayals, the answers to these questions are often complex and multifaceted. However, having a better understanding of these complexities may be helpful in processing experiences of abuse and considering options for community safety. This presentation will address some of our current understanding of people who commit sexual offenses and how sex offense treatment can be used to reduce likelihood of future offending.
